Dust off your Tactical Squads, your Rhinos and your box Dreadnoughts! It's time for some retro action in our Warhammer 40,000 3rd edition games day!
The day will be based around the Badab War as a theme - what this means will be elaborated below but first and foremost it is important to note you must have a working knowledge of the rules of 3rd edition 40k as represented in "The Big Black Book" (https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Warhammer_40,000_3rd_Edition_Rulebook)
This rulebook contains army lists for all the armies that existed in 40k at the time and players are permitted to create their 1000pt armies using these lists or one drawn from a subsequent 3rd edition Codex publication. It really isn't a big deal as long as mechanically it works in 3rd edition!
"Can I use Primaris?" will be one of the most common questions from players that might wish to join in that have either joined the hobby after the advent of Primaris marines and have only them to draw on from their collection, or have in the many years since disbanded their former Space Marines armies. The short answer is yes, but obviously organised into appropriate 3rd edition Space Marine units (such as a "Tactical Squad" being represented by a Sergeant, 7 Intercessors, a Hellblaster and a Desolation Marine). An Impulsor for a Rhino, a Redemptor for a regular Dreadnought etc. As a small note armies containing Primaris proxies will not be eligible for the best painted army award.
However
Players are encouraged to try and bring forth 1000pts of First-Born Space Marines where possible. Most kits are still available, such as the Tactical Squad, the Devastator Squad and vehicles. Some have unfortunately dissapeared from production with Games Workshop, such as the regular Assault Squad, however we reccomend looking into the current Horus Heresy range for First-Born options also. Of course, there's always good ol' fashioned second hand proper retro figures to renovate and give a new lease of life to.
Adeptus Mechanicus players are welcome to proxy their army as Imperial Guard where feasible.
Forces
Players are also encouraged to bring armies that were canonically involved in the Badab War. Loosely these are:
Imperial:
Carcharodons, Exorcists, Fire Angels, Fire Hawks, Howling Griffons, Marines Errant, Minotaurs, Novamarines, Raptors, Red Scorpions, Salamanders, Sons of Medusa, Star Phantoms, Astra Militarum/Imperial Guard
Secessionist:Astral Claws, Executioners, Lamenters, Mantis Warriors, Tyrant's Legion (Astra Militarum/Imperial Guard)
However, in order to bring more players into the fold and represent wider conflicts that may have had an effect on the overall war, the event is open to "any Imperial" and "any Chaos" - after all, it is entirely plausible that a different Chapter was involved somewhere and just not recorded, or a Warband of Night Lords would ambush a force of Sisters of Battle that were attempting to reinforce the Imperial effort!
We'll add up the scores of games won at the end of the day to see whether the Imperial forces win the fight or if history is rewritten and Luft Huron reigns supreme.
The day will consist of two games, both 2 hours each.
Arrival at 11am with a view to kick games off at 11.30, a break at 1.30 for lunch followed by game 2 being played between 2 and 4. Timings are approximate as this is only 1000pts and not a competitive event and aside from the glory of their victory there is no physical prizing, apart from an award for best painted army (armies containing Primaris proxies not eligible) which players will vote on and hopefully encourage a hobby project for some!
The £5 cost is just our regular table fee but purchasing your spot ahead of time will allow us to have confident numbers so please do and let's take a stroll down memory lane!
